"The Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan
Africa

“We succeeded in taking that picture, and, if you look at it, you see
a dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it, everyone you ever
heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives.
The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident
religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and
forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of
civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love,
every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and
explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every
superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history
of our species, lived there — on a mote of dust, suspended in a
sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the
rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in
glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a
fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the
inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable
inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their
misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent
their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the
delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are
challenged by this point of pale light . . .
To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of
human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it
underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately
with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the
only home we’ve ever known.”
— Carl Sagan, speech at Cornell University, October 13, 1994

The mightiest among us, the most powerful we know, are all but
fleeting masters on micro-fractions of a dot.

U.S. companies abandon the NRA as boycott call grows @business
Law & Politics

Delta Air Lines Inc. and United Continental Holdings Inc. became the
latest companies to cut ties with the National Rifle Association after
a call to boycott the lobbying group became a top trend on Twitter
Friday. The online furor continued into the weekend after the NRA’s
leaders attacked the media and Democrats, claiming the fallout from
last week’s Florida high school massacre was being politicized.

One user, with almost a quarter of a million followers, tagged a slew
of brands in his post, including NRA partners Hertz Corp. and LifeLock
Inc. “There are only 5 million NRA members but over 300 million of us!
Businesses have a choice whose business they prefer,” tweeted another.

China senses and acts on US weakness in South China Sea @asiatimesonline
Law & Politics

China is a rising power and it is only natural that it would seek to
expand its areas of naval operations and political influence. However,
arriving late to the geopolitical game, China does not want to play by
the rules that have long been established but which Beijing did not
help to formulate.

China seems to think that, because it was once the center of its
world, more respect for its exalted status is needed. And Beijing
wants to unilaterally change the rules for international engagement
for its own benefit. But that doesn’t work and neither does being a
maritime bully.

Beginning in 2010, Beijing upped its assertiveness in claiming
ownership to much of the South China Sea, eventually putting forward a
claim that the waters within a ‘Nine Dash Line’ map have been Chinese
since historical times.

That sweeping claim intersects waters and territories claimed by
Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. Some readings of the
broad map also put China in conflict with Indonesia over the gas-rich
Natuna Sea.

Beijing has since been building military outposts on reefs and
man-made islets in that area – pieces of land that are not recognized
as sovereign territory by the United Nations Convention on the Law of
the Sea (UNCLOS).

Some of those manufactured islets have recently been outfitted with
landing strips capable of accommodating transport aircraft and jet
fighters for even greater projection of power.

Interestingly, just as the Quad – Australia, India, Japan, and the US
– alliance is girding up to challenge China with Freedom of Navigation
Operations (FONOP) sailings in the South China Sea, China has extended
its focus to the Indian Ocean through patrols in waters close to the
Maldives.

The Maldives are 1,200 small coral islands within a chain of 26 atolls
running 520 nautical miles (960 kilometers) north to south. Starting
just 185 nautical miles (385 kilometers) south-southwest of India,
they form a natural barrier to deep-water vessels.

The only safe east-west passage through the area is at the southern
end of this shallow seas nation in the Indian Ocean.

Beijing fears being hemmed in by Washington and its allies, and it is
through these waters leading to the Straits of Malacca chokepoint that
China’s energy supplies from the Middle East pass.

China clearly worries that Sea Lines of Communications (SLOC) could be
interdicted with a subsequent loss of greatly needed energy. And
Beijing fully intends to keep those SLOCs open by controlling waters
contiguous to seafaring bottlenecks.

Since Washington did nothing in response to the 2016 China drone
heist, and despite American statements that it intends to ramp up
FONOPs in the South China Sea, China seems to be confidently expanding
its naval reach.

Besides intending to control the eastern approach to the Straits of
Malacca by claiming much of the South China Sea, Beijing is now
gearing up to dominate the western approach in the Indian Ocean to
command SLOCs there as well.

It thus seems likely that China will force a naval confrontation with
the US or one of its allies in the near future. If Beijing does
militarily challenge Washington in the South China Sea, how will the
US and its emerging Quad alliance react? What if the challenge occurs
instead or simultaneously in the Indian Ocean?

It will be interesting, to understate the escalating situation, to see
how China plays on any belief that America’s lack of a meaningful
response over the 2016 drone incident shows the US is a paper tiger in
the region.

If Washington backs off or otherwise acquiesces during any naval clash
with Beijing, the remaining members of the Quad will likely fold as
well. China would then have won nearly all of the Asian waters it
needs for controlling vital SLOCs.

Is the rest of the world prepared to live with that?

@Spotify plans to list shares, fend off @Apple and @amazon
International Trade

Spotify, which wants to trade as SPOT on the New York Stock Exchange,
is taking an unusual path to the U.S. public markets, with a direct
listing that will let investors and employees sell shares without the
company raising new capital or hiring a Wall Street bank or broker to
underwrite the offering.

Because the company will not issue any new shares, it did not specify
a listing price. Based on private transactions, it is valued at
roughly $19 billion, according to Reuters calculations.

Spotify, launched in 2008 and available in more than 60 countries, is
the biggest music streaming company in the world and counts services
from Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Alphabet Inc‘s<
GOOGL.O> Google as its main rivals.

In the filing, Spotify laid out detailed financial data for the first
time, showing rising revenue and relatively steady operating costs,
which analysts took as a positive.

Revenue rose 39 percent to 4.09 billion euros ($4.99 billion) in 2017,
from 2.95 billion euros a year earlier. Its operating loss widened to
378 million euros in 2017 from 349 million euros.

Its net loss ballooned 129 percent in 2017, driven mostly by financing
costs related to a 2016 deal in which Sweden-based Spotify raised $1
billion in debt that would convert to shares upon an initial public
offering.

“The revenue continues to grow but in particular their costs are
growing slower than revenue, which is exactly what you expect in a
business like this,” said Jay Ritter, an expert in initial public
offerings and professor at the University of Florida.

Spotify compared its aspirations to the reach of Facebook (FB.O) and
YouTube. “We believe the universality of music gives us the
opportunity to reach many of the over 3.6 billion internet users
globally,” it said.

With 71 million premium subscribers globally, Spotify has about twice
as many paying customers as music streaming runner up Apple, with 36
million. Including those who listen to advertising-supported streams,
Spotify has about 159 million monthly average users.

Amazon Music Unlimited has 16 million paying subscribers, and Pandora
Media Inc (P.N) has 5.48 million total subscribers.

Spotify’s premium subscription costs $9.99 a month, but it said it saw
great potential in its ad-supported service, which Apple does not
offer.

“With our ad-supported service, we believe there is a large
opportunity to grow users and gain market share from traditional
terrestrial radio,” Spotify said.

Roku, a premium gin made using six distinctly Japanese botanicals, has entered the U.K. market
Commodities

“We wanted to make something that was unusual but not strange,” Torii
explained as we tasted five different types of gin, before he
presented the signature Roku gin & tonic, which is served with ice and
six hand-cut slivers of fresh ginger.

Roku, which means six in Japanese, is distilled in Osaka. It is made
with Sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea
and sansho pepper, for a spicy finish. Each Japanese botanical has
been harvested in accordance with the concept of shun, which means
they are only harvested at peak flavor.

The hexagonal bottles feature one of the botanicals on each facet. The
label is printed on traditional Japanese washi paper.

And the flavor? Roku is dangerously light and smooth, smelling of
citrus with a hint of spice. There are eight traditional botanicals in
the mix, too: juniper berries, coriander, angelica root, angelica
seed, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange peel, lemon peel.

Suntory is hoping to build on the success of Japanese whiskies in the
U.K., where brands such as Suntory Hibiki, Hakushu and Yamazaki are
finding favor in the home of Scotch.
